Understanding Dimensional Weight
Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is a pricing technique used by shipping carriers that accounts for package volume, not just actual weight. When your package takes up more space on a truck or plane than its weight suggests, carriers charge you for that space—this is called the "Air Tax." You pay whichever is greater: actual weight or DIM weight.
DIM Weight Calculator computes your billable weight across 40+ carrier presets (FedEx, UPS, DHL, USPS, and regional carriers), visualizes your Air Tax in 3D, and helps you optimize packaging to reduce shipping costs. The interactive view shows the "wasted space" inside your box that you're paying to ship.
How to Use This Tool
Enter Box Dimensions
Input the Length, Width, and Height of your shipping box. Toggle between Imperial (inches) or Metric (cm) units.
Enter Actual Weight
Input the actual weight of your package including product and packaging materials.
Select Carrier
Choose from 40+ carrier presets. Each carrier has a different DIM divisor that affects your billable weight.

Understanding Your Inputs
Box Dimensions (L × W × H)
External dimensions of your shipping carton. Measure at the longest points. Carriers use box size, not product size.
Actual Weight
The real weight of your package on a scale, including product, packaging materials, and fill.
Carrier / DIM Divisor
Each carrier has a DIM divisor (e.g., 139 for FedEx/UPS domestic, 166 for negotiated rates). Lower divisor = higher DIM weight.
Product Dimensions (Optional)
Enable "Product → Box" mode to enter your actual product size and visualize how it fits inside the box.
Reading Your Results
DIM Weight
Volume-based weight. Formula: (L × W × H) ÷ DIM Divisor. This is what carriers charge if your box is "puffy."
Billable Weight
Whichever is greater: actual weight or DIM weight. This is what you pay for.
Air Tax %
Percentage of billable weight that's "air" (DIM weight exceeding actual). 0% means you're paying for real weight only.
Efficiency Score
How well your product fills the box. Higher is better. 100% means zero wasted space.
How DIM Weight Works
Carriers calculate Dimensional Weight using this formula:
DIM Weight = (L × W × H) ÷ DIM Divisor
Common DIM divisors: 139 (FedEx/UPS domestic), 166 (negotiated rates), 5000 (metric international). Lower divisors result in higher DIM weight and higher costs.
40+ Carrier Presets
Pre-configured DIM divisors for FedEx, UPS, DHL, USPS, and regional carriers across US, Canada, UK, EU, and Australia.

Pro TipRight-Size Your Boxes
Use the "Product → Box" feature in the sidebar to enter your actual product dimensions. The 3D view shows the product inside the box, revealing wasted space. Switching to a smaller box can eliminate DIM charges entirely.
